What is Career Advising?
As students enter new phases of college life, we expect them to have questions about college majors as they relate to career choices. Students can make individual appointments with Career Center advisors to talk about anything that relates to career exploration and development. We understand that personal issues often overlap with career issues. Exploratory majors can receive assistance with self-exploration and career choice. Declared majors who are considering a change are also advised to visit with one of our advisors. In addition, our advisors can assist students with resume and cover letter development, graduate school options and job-search issues.
What we do
- Our goal is to empower students to make informed career decisions by helping them better understand themselves and the world of work.
How career Advisors can help
- Meet with you one-on-one to discuss and plan career decisions/major selection
- Teach you effective ways to make decisions
- Provide and direct you to information on majors, internships and careers
- Administer and interpret assessments that help you better understand your personality, interests, values, abilities and skills
- Help you generate options for your career and educational future
- Listen to your ideas/feelings and give you feedback
- Educate you on the culture and expectations of the work world
- Assist you with the development of resumes and other job-search correspondence
- Help you prepare for interviews for full-time, part-time employment, internships and graduate/professional school.
What we can’t do
- Make decisions for you
- Find/secure your job
- Write your resume and cover letters
- Provide professional mental health services
- Give you detailed descriptions of class requirements for majors (Your adviser and/or the Center for Student Success can help you answer those questions.)
Something you should know
Career decision making is affected by a number of factors (personal, social, economic, family, etc.), so these issues will be discussed with your advisor. Please be aware that discussing some of these topics may result in emotional stress. If this happens, we may recommend that you seek help from a mental health professional. If you decide to seek these services, every effort will be made to ensure that you are provided with a timely and appropriate referral.
